Metal detection vs. X-ray inspection

Understand when metal detection is enough, when X-ray inspection adds value, and how each technology supports quality assurance in industrial production.

Metal detection vs. X-ray inspection

Metal detection and X-ray inspection are both used to identify foreign objects, but they solve different problems. Metal detectors are highly effective for detecting ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless-steel contamination in many production environments.

X-ray inspection can detect a wider range of foreign materials depending on product density and application. In addition to metals, X-ray systems may detect materials such as glass, stones or other dense contaminants.

When metal detection is often suitable

  • The main risk is metallic contamination.
  • The product or material flow is consistent.
  • The line needs robust and cost-effective detection.
  • The system is used for machine protection or product quality control.

When X-ray inspection may be considered

  • The risk includes non-metallic foreign objects.
  • The product is already packaged.
  • Additional inspection functions may be valuable.
  • The application requires a broader detection method.

The right choice depends on risk profile, product characteristics and production requirements. A technical review of the application is usually the best starting point.
